Baptism

Baptism is a sacrament, an action of Jesus Christ in his Church. A sacrament is an outward sign of inward grace, instituted by Jesus. grace is given to the soul of the person who receives the sacrament. In this sacrament, Jesus Christ

  • forgives original sin and opens the gates of heaven for us
  • welcomes us in his Church
  • makes us the sons and daughters of God

Baptism is not simply a “naming ceremony”.  It is the beginning of the Christian life and the gateway to eternal life. Because of this, the sacrament of Baptism is taken very seriously in the Catholic Church

How to register

The Baptism Preparation Program requires parents to complete the registration form below. After paperwork is complete our baptism catechist will contact you about attending a class and book a date for the baptism

Requirements for Godparents/Sponsors

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Expected to attend Mass (at any Catholic Parish) every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation
  • Must be in ‘good standing’ within the Catholic Church. If married, the Godparents need to be married in the Catholic Church. If single, must be living a chaste life (not living with girlfriend/boyfriend)

Baptism Frequently Asked Questions

How soon should my child be baptized?

Children should be baptised within the first weeks after birth. We encourage you to speak with us about the baptism in the 4th-6th month of pregnancy.

The priest will be able to give a special blessing to the expectant mother and pray for the safe delivery of the child.

It is best to baptize your child as close to birth as possible.

Yes. A child may be baptized so long as there is a well-founded hope that they will be brought up in the practice of the Catholic faith. If you have any questions about marriage in the Catholic Church, please ask the priest because there are often misunderstandings in this area.

Please contact us about emergency baptism.

If you are a member of another parish and wish to have your child’s baptism at Divine Mercy, please kindly discuss this with the Pastor of your parish.

Preparation Classes

Parents and Godparents attend 1 preparation class on the Saturday immediately before the baptismal date.  Attendance to this class is mandatory.

Baptism Day

Baptism takes place on the second and fourth Sundays of each month at 9 AM Mass.

Parents and Godparents of the child are expected to attend the 9 AM Sunday Mass on the day of their child’s baptism.

A candle is used as a sign of the baptized child sharing in the resurrection of Jesus. Traditionally the child to be baptised should be dressed in white

Responsibilities of Parents

The ceremony of Baptism assumes a well-founded hope that you will bring your child up in the practice of the Catholic Faith.  This means:

  • you teach your child to pray
  • you teach your child to lead a good Christian moral life
  • you worship at Mass regularly on Sundays & Holy Days of Obligation
  • you teach your child the Catholic faith

Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

“When he returned to his disciples he found them asleep. He said to Peter, “So you could not keep watch with me for one hour? Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. ”The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Mathew 26:40-41

Perpetual Adoration is our loving response to God’s infinite love. By spending a quiet hour with Him in the Eucharist, we honor His presence and offer Him the comfort and companionship He deserves. Imagine a world where Jesus is never alone. A world where His presence is continually adored. Together, as a parish family, we can make this a reality.

Sacrament of Reconciliation: Confession

I am love and mercy itself. … Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. … My mercy is greater than your sins, and those of the entire world

Confession is a powerful sacrament where we experience God’s infinite mercy and forgiveness. It’s a chance to cleanse our souls, receive healing, and renew our relationship with God. Don’t let the weight of sin burden your heart. Set an appointment and come to God’s mercy.
